Bluewater wins award with Jenson Button

Bluewater, Europe’s leading retail and leisure destination, last night won a coveted award at the annual British Council of Shopping Centre’s (BCSC) Gold Awards for the Jenson Button/Virgin Media SpeedWeek50 event, which took place in October last year.
At a ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London attended by over 1,200 people from the UK’s shopping centre industry, Bluewater won the award in the Income Generation Project of the Year category.
Comedian and impressionist, Rory Bremner, presented Bluewater with the award in recognition of the success of the event, which saw Bluewater giving a hero’s homecoming to Jenson Button, just days after he had been crowned Formula One World Champion.
Devised and managed by Bluewater’s commercialisation team, the event included a personal appearance from Jenson Button, for which Bluewater created a unique brand experience.  Jenson met guests in an F1-style paddock, drove celebrities and VIPs on hotlaps in an AMG Mercedes around a bespoke track, and completed a Q&A session with the BBC’s F1 commentator, David Croft.  Jenson’s appearance was the culmination of a week-long event to launch Virgin Media’s 50Mb broadband service.
Commenting on the award, Richard Isom, commercialisation manager at Bluewater, said: “This is a great accolade for Bluewater and Virgin Media, and recognises Bluewater’s ability to host spectacular brand events that are a benchmark for the industry.  It is also a testament to the work of the team at Bluewater in delivering a unique experience for our guests.”
The award is the second major accolade that the event has won, following the gold received at the International Council of Shopping Center’s Solal European Marketing Awards, held in Lisbon in June.
